OVERVIEW

Brown – Banded Cockroaches are the smallest invasive cockroaches, the adults are 11 – 14. 5mm in length. The colorful cockroaches were named from the light brown or tan transverse bands that are present on the wings of the adults and across the body of the young or nymphs.

ACTIVITIES, FOOD AND HABITS

Different from German cockroaches preferring warm temperature approximately 20℃ and moist, brown – banded cockroaches tends to inhabit areas which are less humid and warmer, with a temperature greater than 27 ℃. In some architectures, these insects gather on the ceilings, roof tops and in engines. They are nocturnal insects and sometimes they can be seen in the morning when they are feeding.

REPRODUCTION

Brown – banded cockroaches may live anywhere in 130 – 145 days, with an average life span of 206 days. During that time, the female can produce approximately 14 egg capsules or oothecas during of her life. They lay these egg capsules containing about 10 – 18 eggs and bring themselves in 24 – 36 hours. After that, they attach it in safe areas until the young hatch.

SIGNS OF BROWN – BANDED COCKROACHES

Sightings

Brown – banded cockroaches commonly active in nights or midnights. However, there is nothing surprising when they find food in the days or escape from the light when cupboard or panels are opened.

We can determine brown – banded cockroaches through their droppings. Droppings can be found in places where they gather and droppings are dark brown in color and spotted. These droppings are used to mark safe gathering areas for other cockroaches. We can see brown – banded cockroaches in ceiling, surrounding ceiling lamp or even behind pictures.

Egg capsules

Small size, about 5 mm, these egg capsules are very hard to find because they lie under water or in crevices. However, when these egg capsules are broken, especially when eggs hatch, the yellow eggs will appear clearly.

Brown – banded cockroaches prefer moist and warm areas such as cupboards, garden – manger or warehouses. They also invade electric equipment or surround fridge engines. Brown – banded cockroaches also hide in places which are out of human sigh such as clocks or pictures. They avoid water sources and sometimes appear on ceiling. Brown – banded cockroaches can cause many serious effects and threat our health. They carry many bacteria and harmful protozoans which cause gastritic and diarrhea. Moreover, house cockroaches also cause asthma and allergies.
